The game follows the journey of four main characters: Tiz Arrior, Agnès Oblige, Ringabel, and Edea Lee. The narrative centers on Agnès' quest as a Vestal to awaken the elemental crystals, which have been corrupted by a pervasive darkness. Players will explore the world of Luxendarc, encountering various towns, dungeons, and landscapes.

Combat is turn-based, utilizing a unique "Brave and Default" system. The Default command allows characters to defend, reducing incoming damage and storing a "Brave Point" (BP). The Brave command enables characters to take multiple actions in a single turn, consuming BP. Characters can even use Brave when their BP is negative, but this will result in them being unable to act for subsequent turns until their BP recovers.

The job system allows for extensive character customization. Players can assign a main job and a sub-job to each character, combining abilities from different classes. Available jobs include but are not limited to Monk, White Mage, Black Mage, Knight, Thief, and Spell Fencer. This system permits the creation of diverse party compositions and strategies for various combat encounters.

Further features include a "Friend Summon" system, allowing players to utilize abilities from other players' characters, and the "Reconstruct Norende" mini-game, where players rebuild a destroyed village to unlock new items and upgrades.
